and the champion is… a German

It is the second time ever, a German won a major golf tournament. Since Bernhard Langers victory at the Masters, lots of time has passed. But on Sunday, 25 year old Martin Kaymer won the USPGA Championship at Whistling Straits at Lake Michigan in Wisconsin, the last of the four major golf competitions to be held this year. Quote the official website of the event:

“First, Martin Kaymer had to survive the deepest field of any major championship. Then, he had to conquer the long, demanding, bunker-filled test of golf that is Whistling Straits. And if that wasn’t enough, the 25-year-old German had to endure a three-hole playoff with long-hitting, crowd favorite Bubba Watson.”

Well done & congrats to Mr. Kaymer. By the way: this spectacular news was worth exactly 0 reports on regular German TV stations and news. Such is the public standing of this demanding sport in Germany to this day. Except for a wrap up last night at Sport1. They will re-run it on Thursday, 23:00, if you’re interested.
